Dublin Bay Saltmarsh Restoration
Client
Dublin Port Company / Dublin City Council
Area
28 hectares
Location
Dublin, Ireland
Services
A proposal to re-establish 28 hectares of native saltmarsh on the northern edge of Dublin Bay as a tidal buffer, carbon sink, and habitat for internationally protected bird species. Saltmarsh is one of the most carbon-dense ecosystems on earth and one of the most effective natural sea defences. This project, developed in partnership with Dublin Port Company, would create a living edge to the bay that would grow more resilient with every passing tide.
Our Approach
Tidal hydraulic modelling would identify the optimal locations for saltmarsh re-establishment based on wave energy, sediment transport, and existing intertidal gradients. We would design a phased re-introduction strategy beginning with pioneer species — common cord-grass and glasswort — which would stabilise sediment and raise the surface elevation before the full saltmarsh community of sea purslane, sea lavender, and sea aster could establish. The project would also create extensive mudflat habitat for overwintering waders and wildfowl.
